Here are 26 original photos that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Wye Switches" in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, between 1960 and 1965. Local folk call this place the "Wye Switches" because it features an actual railroad wye with three switches ~ but there is a lot of local history here, too. From 1834 until 1854, this was the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad between Hollidaysburg and Johnstown. And from 1850 until 1854, this location was known as "New Portage Junction" since it was the eastern junction of the Allegheny Portage Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad's mainline from Altoona. After the Horseshoe Curve was completed and the present main line was opened in 1854, the PRR bought the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal-New Portage Railroad package from the State ~ but abandoned both of them in 1857. In the first five years of the 20th Century, the Pennsylvania Railroad engaged in a massive construction project designed to relieve rail traffic congestion both up and down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains. They built the double-tracked Petersburg-Frankstown Secondary Track, which basically followed the path of the old Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. In Hollidaysburg, they constructed both west- and eastbound classification yards, as well as a roundhouse and supporting shops. From Duncansville to Gallitzin, they reopened and double-tracked the New Portage Branch Line. And in Gallitzin, they dug the Allegheny Tunnel, which opened in 1904. Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, in March of 1960. Shown here are two unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad "EF" Class units and a cabin car. They would have been driven forward from East Altoona to the wye, proceeded up the New Portage Branch line for a hundred feet or so, and then will run backwards from there into the Hollidaysburg Yards for the purpose of picking up a train of new and/or reconditioned freight cars and pulling them up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Duncansville's 3rd Street Grade Crossing is visible in the immediate foreground.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9394, an ES-12 built by EMD in May of 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. In this context, it's pushing a string of gondolas past WYE Tower toward the Hollidaysburg Yards. Note the dwarf signal in the foreground. From 1834 to 1954, this was the original right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

Wye Switchds. Here is an original photo that I took at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1962. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9574 and #2008. #9574 is a BF-15 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1949. rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. #2008 is a BF-16 constructed by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in October of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of.1966. These two "Sharks" and N-5 cabin car # 477719 have just come from East Altoona. They're about to cross US Route 22 and proceed up the New Portage Branch line for a hundred feet or so, then back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a train of new and/or reconditioned freight cars, and then head up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8735, a BS-12M switcher built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in September of 1952, rated at 1,200 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967 after just 15 years of revenue service. It's pushing a single loaded hopper car (#674134) from Hollidaysburg to Altoona. Note the railroader standing on top, acting as a lookout!

Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 27 August 1962. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8566 and #8555. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8566 was constructed in September of 1953, while #8555 was built in August of the same year. They've pulled a mixed-cargo freight train down the New Portage Branch line via the Muleshoe Curve and are about to cross US Route 22 on their way into Altoona, where they'll rejoin the mainline at ALTO Tower and proceed to the Eastbound Classification Yards.

Description:
Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took at the "Wye Switches" (aka "New Portage Junction") in Duncansville, Pennsylvania in the Summer of 1963. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's signal located at the northern leg of the Wye. The track to the left leads to the New Portage Branch line, the track to the right leads to the Hollidaysburg Yards, while the track beyond leads to the PRR's main line in Altoona. Note the train coming from Altoona. It's traveling on what was once the PRR's original mainline from Altoona to its connection with the Allegheny New Portage Railroad (i.e., 1850-1854). After the Horseshoe Curve was completed and the present mainline was opened in 1854, the PRR bought the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal-New Portage Railroad package from the State ~ but abandoned both by 1857.

These three Diesels, two freight cars, PRR caboose #477781, and three ALCO helper engines have just arrived from Altoona and have stopped in the middle of US Route 22 so that the fireman can call-in to request clearance to proceed up the New Portage Branch for a short distance and then stop. After that, they will back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then pull it up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8670, #8660, and #8673. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. These three helper engines, caboose #477781, two freight cars, and three lead engines have just arrived from Altoona. They have stopped, and are awaiting permission to back into the Hollidaysburg Yards. Duncansville's Fifth Street is in the photos center, Second Avenue is on the left, while Third Avenue (i.e., US Route 22) is visible on the right. These tracks occupy what was once the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad (1834-1854).

These three locomotives and a 77-car mixed-cargo freight train are stopped at 3rd Street in Duncansville, awaiting orders to proceed up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin and points West. Once upon a time, there were four sets of tracks at this point ~ as evidenced by the wide signal bridge. This is also where an eastbound freight train that had lost its brakes coming down the New Portage Branch Line crashed into several waiting locomotives on Sunday, 06 November 1916.

The wooden shanty with coal-burning stove is a left-over from the good old days when the New Portage Branch Line was double-tracked, and switches needed to be thrown at all hours of the day or night.

Wye Switches. Here is the first of three time exposures that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 18 September 1965. Shown here is PRR engine #8626, an AS-18M built by ALCO in 1956 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It is pulling an eight-car mixed-cargo freight train from Altoona to Hollidaysburg. The caboose is #477184. This time-exposure was taken from the signal bridge spanning the railroad tracks, facing WYE Tower. Visible are light streaks from the headlight of the passing freight train, as well as the headlights and taillights of cars zooming by on US Route 22 on the right.

Wye Switches. Here is the third of three time exposures that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 18 September 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6000 and #6009. Both are EF-25A's built by EMD in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. They are pushing an 84-car freight train from Altoona up the New Portage Branch Line via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The caboose is #478081. Duncansville's Fifth Street is in the photo's center, while Second Avenue is on the left.

Wye Switches. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during late November of 1965. Shown here are two unidentified GM-EMD "F" units pulling a string of new H-43B 100-ton hopper cars. They are passing WYE Tower on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. This is the actual New Portage Junction: the original PRR main line from Altoona (on the left) merges here with the original right-of-way of the Allegheny Portage Railroad.
